Hey @ingalls - thank you for your PR and sorry for not responding sooner, I've been a bit too busy lately and I'm catching up on everything that happened in this repo. I see the CI checks failing, could you please look into that? As for the general logic, it would be great to cover the issue you're addressing by a test case

Reopening rebased against master as this is still a feature we would love to have merged upstream.
