Layer 1 parses .effigy notation into a typed AST, then expands it to a deterministic JSON dossier. No LLM involved. Run it once at build time.
Layer 2 takes that AST and your current game state — trust score, known facts, state variables — and assembles the dialogue context the model actually sees. Trust-gated examples, the right arc phase voice, active goals, filtered constraints. The rest stays under the counter.
Layer 3 takes the AST and conversation history and computes emotional state and intentions. For characters whose inner life should shift with what's happened, not just with what's declared.

ARC conditions and @when gates read them directly. The DSL accepts numeric comparisons (ruin>=3, days_since_incident<7) and boolean flags. You define what the variables mean; the library evaluates them.
emotional_inputs feed Layer 3. They're floating-point signals — instability, grief, urgency, suspicion — that compute_emotional_state() combines with the character's trait profile and known facts to produce an EmotionalState object. That object informs build_synthesis_prompt(), which can ask a model to reflect on how the character has changed. Useful when you want a character's inner life to drift with the story, not just toggle at trust thresholds.
