How do I know the object I retrieved is an NFT?

In Ethereum, I can use supportsInterface to check whether the contract follows the NFT standard.

How can I do that in sui?

Theoretically, due to Sui's object model, any object with key + store is an NFT.

On Solana, according to the Metaplex protocol standard, users can determine whether the tokenAccount is an NFT by checking the PDAs of the tokenAccount.

Like @Suficio said every object is an NFT on Sui which is stupid and I wouldn't say I like it. But to answer your question one way could be to check whether Collection<phantom T> exists for the given object it should be an NFT using OriginByte's standard.

I absolutely hate the way Display is designed too the fields need to be replaced it's just a mess.

And the fact that they don't have an official NFT standard.

It's just a fucking mess.
